After gathering ingredients to make vegetable soup one morning, the colorful vegetables decorated the kitchen counter so beautifully that I realized they needed to be preserved in a painting instead of prepared for a soup. That initial painting led to arranging vegetables less traditionally on the studio floor. Painting freely, in a looser style and relating the vegetables to the paint-stained studio floor it became clear to me while sliding the brush back and forth between the newly painted vegetable shapes that I am intrigued by the dynamic of the whole piece- the relationship of the shapes and colors to each other and to the way they relate to the background. I’m inspired by the organic shapes, lines, and colors, of the vegetables, the way in which they relate to one another, creating continuous, sweeping lines and movement throughout the paintings.
Also, by placing the vegetables at times in a bird’s eye view and at other times in a worm’s eye view, I attempt get a varied range of perspectives to view and paint from so that they can become possibly abstracted and hopefully intriguing.
